A Presentation Checklist

Analyze

Subject

  • What’s the subject?

  • How much do you know about it?

  • Do you feel confident about briefing on it?

  • If you don’t, who should?

  Audience

  • How many people?

  • Who?

  • What do they know about the subject?

  • Anybody strongly biased – either for or against?

  • Can they make a decision?

  • Are they there to make one?

  • Should you talk to anyone while you’re preparing?

  • Who knows whom?

  • Is there anybody else you should talk to?

  • Who do you know in the audience?

Occasion

  • What’s the occasion?

  • What kind of meeting?

  • Why is this group meeting?

  • What else is on the agenda?

  • How much time do you have?

  • When do you present?

  • Are they there to hear your presentation only?

  Place

  • Where?

  • What’s the room look like?

  • Equipment?

  • Have you attended a meeting there or presented there before?

  • How can the place help or hurt you?

  • Are there AV people to help you?

Organize

  • What’s your main point? 

  • Write it in just a few phrases or sentences.

  • How would you describe it?

  • Recommendation?

  • Conclusion?

  • Solution?

  • Request?

  • Summary?

  • Problem?

Design

  • Tell Then What You're Going To Tell Them
  • Tell Them
  • Tell Them What You Told Them

Visuals

Using the outline you just designed, rough out your main visuals.

Deliver

How you deliver is everything. Let's get it right before you walk in and stand before your audience.

Do this:

  • Gather a group of associates

  • Get out the video camera

  • Deliver the presentation

How long was it?

  It was   ________________   minutes long.

  How long did you want it to be?

  I was shooting for ____________  minutes.

Here are my own impressions of how I think I did:

Now, ask for feedback, look at the tape, and answer these questions:

First moments of the presentation

  • Did I come to the group with good posture and confidence?

  • Did I smile?

  • Did I make eye contact with each audience member before I spoke?

Introduction of main point

  • Was my purpose clear?

  • Did my blueprint set the stage?

Body       

  • Was my support on target?

  • Did I stick to the blueprint?

  • Did my words and visuals reinforce each other?

Ending

  • Did I return to my main point, The Big Idea?

  • Did I call for action?

Delivery Style

  • Was my posture good?

  • Did I move with purpose?

  • Were my gestures effective, natural, and smooth?

  • Was my eye contact consistent?

  • Was my voice interesting and varied?

  • Did I have a great conversation with the audience?

  • Am I ready to go do it for real and win?
